UUIDv4 Generator to Create Random Unique Identifiers Online

Generate a fresh version 4 UUID with the UUIDv4 Generator whenever your app, database or test data needs an identifier that is unique without a central counter.

Databases, apps and distributed systems all face the same problem: every record needs an identifier, and those identifiers must never collide, even when several servers create them at the same moment without talking to each other. UUIDv4 is the standard answer. A version 4 UUID is a 128-bit value generated from random numbers and written in a fixed text format, and this UUIDv4 Generator creates one for you instantly, ready to copy into your code or database.

What a UUIDv4 Looks Like and How It Is Built

A UUID is displayed as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups separated by hyphens, 36 characters in total, like this: 3f6b2c90-4a1d-4e5f-8a7b-0c9d1e2f3a4b. In a version 4 UUID, the first digit of the third group is always 4, which declares the version, and the first digit of the fourth group is always 8, 9, a or b, which declares the standard variant. The remaining digits are random: about 122 bits of randomness in every identifier. The current specification is maintained as RFC 9562, which is why UUIDs generated anywhere all follow the same shape.

Features of This UUIDv4 Generator

  • Creates genuine version 4 UUIDs with the correct version and variant digits.
  • A Generate button produces a fresh identifier on every click.
  • A Copy button copies the result exactly, hyphens included, with no risk of transcription mistakes.
  • Useful anywhere a quick, standard identifier is needed, from database rows to test fixtures.

How to Generate a UUIDv4

  1. Open the UUIDv4 Generator page.
  2. Click Generate to create a new random identifier.
  3. Check the value shown; the third group should begin with 4, confirming it is version 4.
  4. Click Copy to copy the UUID to your clipboard.
  5. Paste it into your database, configuration file, API payload or test data.
  6. Click Generate again for every additional identifier you need; never reuse one.

Why Collisions Are Not a Practical Worry

With roughly 122 random bits, the number of possible version 4 UUIDs is about 5.3 undecillion, a 5.3 followed by 36 zeros. Random generation stays safe at real-world scale: you would need to create well over a trillion identifiers before the chance of a single duplicate becomes even remotely worth discussing, and systems that generate millions of IDs a day still sit far below that. This is why UUIDs can be minted independently on many machines at once, a property sequential numbers can never offer.

Where UUIDv4 Identifiers Earn Their Keep

They are the default primary key in many modern databases, especially when data is created offline or on multiple servers and merged later. Developers use them for session references, request and correlation IDs in logs, uploaded file names that must never overwrite each other, and disposable test data. They also appear in URLs where a plain counting number would reveal how many records a system holds. When what you actually need is a secret rather than an identifier, use the Random Secret Key Generator instead, because a UUID is an ID, not a credential. Related digests for identifying content can be produced with the Hash Generator.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Never reuse a UUID. The entire value of the format is one identifier per thing, forever.
  • Do not use a UUID as a password or API token. Identifiers are meant to be shared and logged; secrets need a generator designed for them, such as the Password Generator.
  • Keep the hyphens unless your system explicitly stores the compact form; mixing formats in one database makes lookups and debugging painful.
  • Case does not matter to the value itself, since the digits are hexadecimal, but pick one casing convention and stay with it.
  • UUIDs are not sortable by creation time. If your database indexes suffer from random key order, that is a storage design question, not a reason to invent your own ID scheme casually.

UUIDv4 Questions Answered

What is the difference between UUIDv4 and other versions?

Version 4 is built from random numbers. Version 1, by contrast, is built from a timestamp and the generating machine's network address, which makes it partly predictable. Version 4's randomness is why it is the most widely used for general identifiers.

Are two generated UUIDs ever identical?

In theory a repeat is possible; in practice the probability is so small that the world's systems treat UUIDv4 values as unique. No coordination or central registry is involved in that trust, just the size of the number space.

How many characters is a UUID?

Thirty-six characters including the four hyphens, or 32 hexadecimal digits without them. The groups follow the pattern 8, 4, 4, 4 and 12 digits.

Can I use a UUIDv4 as a session token or password?

You should not. A UUID is an identifier designed to be shown, stored and logged, and its format even fixes several digits. Use a dedicated secret or password generator for anything that grants access.

Is a UUID the same as a GUID?

Effectively yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit identifier concept, and the text format is identical, so a UUIDv4 from this tool works anywhere a GUID is expected.

Why does the third group always start with 4?

That digit is the version field. It tells any system reading the identifier how it was generated, and for randomly generated UUIDs the value is always 4.

Getting Real Value from the UUIDv4 Generator

The UUIDv4 Generator hands you standard, effectively unique identifiers with a single click and a clean copy. For database keys, request IDs and test data, it removes the coordination problem entirely; just generate a fresh one for every new thing and never look back.
